Hello everyone and welcome to a new school year in Sarah's Senior Infant class in Citywest ETNS!

Firstly, I apologise for the delay with uploading to the website. I was experiencing difficulties initially, but that problem has been solved now, so I am uploading the backlog from September all at once!

Phonics in Senior Infants

We are looking at rhyming words on a daily basis, and this can be practiced at home too. The word families we have cover so far are. -at, -in, -et, -an, -ut, -ap.

We also learned the poem, The Fat Cat.

The Fat Cat

She walks along the garden wall,
She hasn't got a home at all,
The thin cat, the thin cat,
The homeless little thin cat.

But now she lies upon the mat,
Her coat is warm and she is fat,
The fat cat, the fat cat,
The happy little fat cat!

Learning through Play!

Here is a little look at our morning activities and some play rota areas from September.

Maths Work

My class is learning about The Story of 5. This means that they are learning to partition sets to combine numbers up to 5, (e.g.0+5, 1+4, etc...)
This is a screen shot from the visualiser which I use to demo activities to the children, and then they complete this activity in pairs, taking turns to write number sentences on white boards or use the materials and make the partition. The children really enjoy hands on Maths activities and have fun learning them too!

Gingerbread Man Activity

As I'm sure you have seen, the gingerbread men were the first addition to our window display this year. The children carefully followed a set of instructions to complete this fine motor task and it was a very successful lesson. I was proud of their level of focus and impressed by the accuracy of their skills.

Art - Colour mixing.

Last week the children painted colour wheels for art and learned how to mix colours, wash their brushes and how to stay clean in an art class.

The children learned about the three primary colours, red, blue and yellow. They also learned that when you mix two primary colours together that it makes a secondary colour. The secondary colours are orange, purple and green.

Red and yellow make orange
Red and blue make purple
Blue and yellow make green.

The children mixed the secondary colours by themselves in pairs.
