We had our school tour today, to Clonard House in Mullingar. We had a fantastic time, spending half the day learning to be servants in a Victorian Manor, and the afternoon learning how the other half lived!
We have a new teacher in our room today! Siobhán is a student teacher. She started with us today and she will be teaching us for the next three weeks.
Siobhán is very excited to teach us all kinds of interesting things - we will be learning lots about China, and even doing a class project!
Before the Mid Term Break, we went on a local history walk. We had been learning a lot about the history of Saggart, by talking with our families, looking at old photographs, and old maps too.
While on our walk, we particularly watched out for things that looked really old, and things that looked really new.
As an introduction to history in Second Class, we did a group work activity where we had to sort pictures of old Ireland, from oldest to newest. Everybody had an opinion and we all managed to agree on an order.
In examining the pictures, we were looking for hints in the people's clothes, building materials, the tools they were using, and the types of food they ate.
Finally, we placed all of the images on a timeline of Irish history. We can now use this timeline as a reference throughout the rest of the school year.
